I'm Deacon Walter Middleton
Walter Middleton worked with World Vision from January 1988 to July 2015, and when he retired; he had worked for World Vision for 27 years.
Prior to this, Walter worked with CARE International, between 1969 and 1987, in India, Somalia and Mozambique. He is a citizen of India and had been active in the global food assistance arena for 46 years. From October 2010, he served World Vision International, as the Partnership Leader for the Food and Livelihood Security Cluster (FLS), when the cluster was formed. The FLS changed its name to Resilience and Livelihoods Team (R<) in April 2014 and was made up of the following complimentary disciplines: Agriculture and Food Security (A&FS), Disaster Risk Reduction and Community Resilience (DRR/CR), Economic Development (ED), and Natural Environment and Climate Issues (NECI), with advocacy as a cross-cutting theme.
Walter provided overall leadership to a close-knit group of sectoral leaders, whose collective experience added up to 160 years. The team was committed to systems approaches, innovative solutions, and promotion of evidence-based, effective practice in the resilience and livelihood sector.
Walter is very passionate about caring for the needy and the hungry. He was the President of the St Vincent de Paul Society, a non-profit organisation that provides direct assistance to anyone suffering or in need. The St Vincent de Paul Society offers a lifeline to those in want of food and clothing, rent assistance, medical aid, help with addiction or incarceration, employment and shelter.
Prior to October 2010, Walter was the Vice-President of World Vision’s Food Programming Management Group, providing overall leadership to World Vision’s food programmes, worldwide, which at that time was valued at over US$350 million.
During this period, he developed the following publications:
A 45-minute training video on Commodity Management, covering all aspects of food aid management, assessment, port and warehouse operations, logistics, food distribution, monitoring, claims procedures and food for work schemes.
A Food Monitor’s manual.
A manual on Warehouse Management and Storage Practices.
Assisted in preparation of the World Vision Commodity Manual.
His key experience lies in development relief, management training, group facilitation, project management, leadership development, public relations, and negotiations.
